Old Has-Beens,
                we get better every year
'Is football playing
Along the river shore,
With lads to chase the leather,
Now I stand up no more?'
Ay, the ball is flying,
The lads play heart and soul ...

Has-Been tales: "Into the Breach" by Milton
Morning of a home game, loafing around the frat house listening to Larko. There's time for one more story, or two, before reporting to Taylor Stadium. Maybe the one about Joe Boyle, or the Dearbot fly, or some other denizen of The Valley.
Time moves ahead - fast it seems. Soon it is time to go. We pile into Andy's yellow Plymouth, which we call "The Halftrack." *

Received this photo of Lark’s 1961 kick from Milt in the mail today. Here’s the caption, in Milt’s words: The football, as it approaches the line-of-scrimmage, is frozen here for all time. Yes, this is it – the climactic moment at the end of a miraculous season. The fans are on their feet, shading their eyes from the late afternoon sun at Taylor Stadium. Clarkie makes a sprawling dive, a half-assed block on one charging Leopard, while Milton is comfortably leaning on another. Smitty’s helmet peeks through the pile; as yet more Leopards leap skyward, albeit in vain. Lark is hunched over in a post kick follow through, golden toe still in the air, while Doyle gazes in amazement and the pigskin spirals its way toward eternal glory. Oh, the wonder of it all!

Comment from: eduardo - Walley and I were watching from the sidelines, both with hip-pointers. we almost died jumping up and down when the kick went over. Reply
